Ok – lets get this thing started again and lets delve into other topics as well.
Wargaming. Specifically Warmachine/Hordes. I played it for a few years after discovering it 10 years ago. After a hiatus and a major overhaul of the game, me and a couple of friends got back into it at the beginning of the year.
Now we are smack dab in the middle of the tournament scene and are constantly training and building lists and throwing dice. For a club war between our club (Headblast in Oberhausen) and another one in Dortmund (PADF) we are currently holding try-outs. Last night was one such game.
I am playing Trolls this time around – after playing Skorne and Menoth earlier in my career. Two friends sold me their whole Troll armies and now I can field quite a bit of stuff.
Last nights game was against a Legion player. These were the lists:
Hoarluk Doomshaper, Rage of Dhunia (*6pts)
* Pyre Troll (5pts)
* Troll Axer (6pts)
* Dire Troll Bomber (10pts)
* Earthborn Dire Troll (10pts)
* Mulg the Ancient (12pts)
* Trollkin Runebearer (2pts)
Krielstone Bearer and 5 Stone Scribes (4pts)
* Krielstone Stone Scribe Elder (1pts)
Swamp Gobber Bellows Crew (Leader and 1 Grunt) (1pts)
Janissa Stonetide (3pts)
Troll Whelps (2pts)
I had played this list once before – in the first try out game against Alex last Saturday. Find a recap of that game here: http://increase5.blogspot.de/2013/09/incoherent-battle-report-hexeris-2-vs.html
My opponent – Dave – brought this eThagrosh List:
Thagrosh, the Messiah (*3pts)
* Shredder (2pts)
* Shredder (2pts)
* Shredder (2pts)
* Carnivean (11pts)
* Scythean (9pts)
* Typhon (12pts)
Blighted Nyss Legionnaires (Leader and 9 Grunts) (6pts)
Spawning Vessel (Leader and 5 Grunts) (3pts)
Blighted Nyss Shepherd (1pts)
2 Spell Martyrs (2pts)
The Forsaken (2pts)
We played the Close Quarters scenario. He started the game.
First turn Legion:
He basically moved everything up the board, gave a +2 ARM spell to the Legionnaires.
First turn Trolls:
I like how few models this list has. Makes the first round just that much faster. Moved everything up the board, threw down Janissas wall, gave Refuge to the Bomber and Wild Agression to Mulg.
Second turn Legion:
He brought his Legionnaires up and … did stuff, I guess. Moved his beasts into place for scoring on the flags and generally in place to engage me next turn.
Second turn Trolls:
Moving the bomber up a couple of inches and throwing bombs in the general direction of the Spawning Vessel, which of course was way out of range. Deviated into the Legionnaires, killing 1 I think. Moving the Earthborn next to the house in the middle, Janissa next to him, putting up her wall. Moved the rest up as well – but not by much.
Third turn Legion:
His Carnivean charged the Earthborn, but didn’t kill him. The Typhon sprayed over Janissa, the Axer and 2 Kriel Stone Scribes, killing the Scribes and Janissa (only with the 3rd spray, though, she passed 2 tough tests). Moved the Feralgeist to control my flag and scoring 2 points.
Third turn Trolls:
The Earthborn ripped the Carnivean appart – using Adaption and the KSB and thus hitting with P+S 19. The Bomber cleared away a few more Legionnaires, the Pyre killed the Spell Martyr. Now Hoarluk pumped a Primal Shock into the Scythean, which stood next to the opposing flag and next to Thagrosh. Then he feated for the Axer and Mulg.
The Axer charged the Typhon doing quite a bit of damage – but he didn’t hit with one additional attack. Mulg then charged the Scythean, killing him in 3 blows. Doomy goaded him 2 more inches and he started whacking at Thagrosh, who had 6 Fury on him – so I failed to kill him.
Fourth turn Legion:
Thagrosh flew over the house to my flag – I didn’t hit the Free Strike. He and Typhon killed the Axer, thus scoring 3 more points and winning the game on scenario.
Overall it wasn’t a bad game. I didn’t make any big mistakes or anything. I could have trampled over the Legionnaires with the Bomber and threatening his beasts some more. But I got Mulg in there killing stuff, I was able to use the feat and I took out 2 of his heavies in 1 turn – without losing any of mine.
If the dice would have been a little luckier, I could have killed his Typhon as well with the Axer (also if I gave him the Pyre Animus of +2 STR) – then he might have thought twice of flying Thagrosh over to the flag and in subsequent rounds I maybe could have killed him.
But that is a lot of if’s and when’s … This list is quite fun, especially since I can hurl Mulg across insane distances. And my opponents seem legitimately scared of Mulg and the Earthborn. Janissa was also made a specific target in both games. If she had survived that 3rd Typhon spray, he would have gotten a charge to the face with her armor piercing special attack.
I am still a bit fuzzy on the use of the whelps. They are good at providing a source of extra healing for the beasts as well as a little fury control (pretty much the only one Trolls have access to). Other than that, I probably have to just play them some more.
Next try out game is against Cryx – either Mortenebra with quite a few Jacks or eAsphyxious with lots of infantry. I am not sure what list I will draw, although I am leaning towards my eMadrak list right now.
