The battle was still raging on around them, but Skaldi Bonehammer wasn’t in fighting mood right now. He had just finished off that hellish machine, the Death Jack. His buddy Grom was sitting beside him, breathing heavily. The rest of their unit was still fighting, but Skaldi had opened the keg of beer he carried and was sharing it with Grom.
Then, out of the corner of his eye he caught a movement. Just glimpses of a dark hooded figure moving through the woods and behind the column. Without thinking Skaldi dropped the keg, and with a loud roar stepped over Grom and the still smoldering remains of the helljack in front of him.
The Cryxian warwitch was actually surprised to see him and recoiled in horror. He couldn’t blame her. He sure made an awesome sight. Beer dripping off his face, fury in his eyes and his mighty hammer raised above his head.
That hammer was the last thing that wretched Cryxian bitch saw before he send her soul – if she even had such a thing – back to her lord and master.
Skaldi Bonehammer is my new hero. That little spat up there was just one of his many heroic deeds in my latest game.
But lets start at the beginning.
My wargaming club, Headblast in Oberhausen, had challenged another club from Dortmund (PadF) to a club war. They wanted to bring down 9 players. More than that were interested on our side, so for the final 4 places we held tryouts. I was to play against Alex, Dave and Mike.
First game was against Alex and his eHexeris Skorne list. I picked my eDoomshaper list – it was the first time I ever played that list. Overall it was a pretty even game, even if Alex beat me and destroyed most of my stuff.
Second game was against Dave and his eThagrosh Legion list. Again I went with the eDoomshaper list and again, I lost. This time I realized afterwards though, that I could have wiped out his army if I had done things a little differently in my last turn. It was just a matter of activating stuff in a different order and just destroying more of his beasts.
Now it was down to my last chance of qualifying for the event. I had to beat Mike and his Cryx. He had Mortenebra and eAsphyxious to choose from. I hoped he’d play Mortenebra, as I saw that as the easier list to beat. I knew before the game that my best chance was to draw my eMadrak list. This one:
Madrak Ironhide, World Ender (*5pts)
* Storm Troll (5pts)
* Troll Axer (6pts)
* Trollkin Runebearer (2pts)
Kriel Warriors (Leader and 9 Grunts) (6pts)
* 1 Kriel Warrior Caber Thrower (1pts)
* Kriel Warrior Standard Bearer & Piper (2pts)
Krielstone Bearer and 5 Stone Scribes (4pts)
* Krielstone Stone Scribe Elder (1pts)
Pyg Burrowers (Leader and 5 Grunts) (4pts)
Trollkin Champions (Leader and 4 Grunts) (10pts)
* Skaldi Bonehammer (3pts)
Fell Caller Hero (3pts)
Stone Scribe Chronicler (2pts)
Totem Hunter (3pts)
Trollkin Champion Hero (3pts)
The first surprise came as we selected lists. He drew his Mortenebra Tier 4 list. This one:
Master Necrotech Mortenebra (*4pts)
* Deathjack (11pts)
* Harrower (9pts)
* Reaper (6pts)
* Seether (8pts)
* Seether (8pts)
* Slayer (5pts)
Necrotech & 1 Scrap Thrall (1pts)
3 Scrap Thrall (1pts)
3 Scrap Thrall (1pts)
Warwitch Siren (2pts)
Warwitch Siren (2pts)
We selected Destruction as our scenario. A rectangular zone in the middle, with objectives at each corner. I won the starting roll and decided to start.
Fell Caller and Chronicler at the left. Beasts, eMadrak, Runebearer, KSB at the center. Champs, Skaldi, Champ Hero and Totem Hunter at the right. Burrower up front.
Mortenebra, one Warwitch, Necrotech, DJ, Harrower, Reaper and one Seether pretty much in the middle. The other Seether on his right flank, the scrap thralls all over the place and the Sirens at the center as well.
First Turn – Trolls:
Basically everything runs. Totem Hunter up the right flank – he has Mortenebra as his prey. Champs get Blood Fury. Burrowers burrow.
First Turn – Cryx:
He runs everything as well. DJ into the zone/or close to it. Scrap Thralls in a wide line up front.
Second Turn – Trolls:
Burrowers come out, charge a couple of Jacks and Scrap Thralls. 3 of them die, plus the 2 scrap thralls. Kriel Warriors do the same with the Scraps on the other side, but none of the KW die. Champs walk up (which prompts the judge to say “at some point you have to explain to me why you are not running all non-shooting units.”). The middle pack walks up as well – I don’t do much else this turn. Totem Hunter runs up another 14” at the right flank.
Second Turn – Cryx:
Deathjack has Overrun on him. Walks up to the middle pack and starts whacking at the Axer and Kriel Stone Bearer. The hits on the KSB only kill 2 of the scribes in the vicinity. But the Axer goes as well. Overrun triggers, Death Jack walks back into the middle.
The Harrower (9 pts) on his left goes and kills my Totem Hunter (3 pts). I basically wasted the TH, but he send a 9 pt model after him so I guess it was worth something.
Seether on the left charges the Kriel Warriors, kills one and goes Knock Down at the end of his activation (which was a mistake – I had Hero’s tragedy on the KW, but only enemy warrior models can trigger it). The other jacks kill all but one Burrower and that is about it.
Third Turn – Trolls:
Now things get interesting. First the lone Burrower goes under again. The champs activate. 4 can charge the Seether, Slayer and the Death Jack. Skaldi goes after the DJ as well. DJ gets hit and damaged by the first Champ. The other 3 champs roll their dice dismally, so neither the Seether nor the Slayer are killed – which at least the Seether should have been, he was attacked by 2 Champs on a charge with Blood Fury on them. Even at P+S 11 they should easily kill him on average dice.
Skaldi charged the DJ. 2 hits and the DJ is no more! That earned Skaldi his first keg of beer.
The Kriel Warriors go after the Seether – but fail to kill him. I probably should have cycled Blood Fury on them. In the middle the Storm Troll sends a shot into nowhere and I try to shield Madrak with the KSB.
Third Turn – Cryx:
The Seether on his right stands up and whacks the Kriel Warriors again – and again I send him Knock Down because of Heros Tragedy. Then Skaldi strikes again. The Warwitch Siren comes to the wall in the middle and wants to spray Madrak. Skaldi intervenes and counter charges her. My opponent had a surprised look on his face.
“He does what? But he can’t charge over rough terrain.”
“Yes he can, he has Relentless charge.”
“But he can’t charge through his own man.”
“Yes he can, because the Champion Hero over here grants him Tactician.”
The Warwitch dies of course. Second keg for Skaldi.
The Reaper in the middle comes over the wall and kills a stone scribe and then starts hitting Madrak, but fails to kill him, even though I wasn’t able to transfer damage – I stupidly loaded up the Storm Troll. He moves the warcaster Attachment in front of Mortenebra.
Fourth Turn – Trolls:
The Burrower comes out and moves b2b with the Warcaster Attachment. The Kriels start hitting the Seether again – still failing to kill him. I charge the Chronicler in, who finishes him off. I move the Fell Caller up the middle, give the Burrower +2 MAT. The Burrower wants his two attacks against the Attachment – hits once, fails the other. Does 4 damage – 1 left.
Madrak moves up a little, and uses all his fury to kill the Reaper. Feat. Burrower misses. Fell Caller misses the spray as well. Nothing else can profit from the feat.
Now Skaldi earns a lifetime beer supply. Champions activate, still have Blood Fury on them. The boss charges the Seether on my right, the second remaining Champ stays at the Slayer. Skaldi walks over to Mortenebra – needs a 7 to hit and does so easily.
By now a crowd had gathered around the table and was chanting “SKALDI! SKALDI!”.
I roll Damage … 5 – 5 – 5 – 6.
Awesome game and one of my best victories in a long time, if not ever. Skaldi was sensational of course, but the rest of the army wasn’t bad either. I think I have a good grasp of this eMadrak list. I will use it (maybe with slight variations) at the next tournament.
Around the Keg:
After this victory we had 3 players with 1 victory each – Mike, Dave and me. We decided the final club war participant on a game of rock, paper, scissors. Dave made it. That club war was last Saturday. After 27 games played, Headblast won 15 to 11. One game was decided to be a 0:0 draw – both players had less than a minute left on their clocks.
I had another tournament a week ago, in Düsseldorf. 3 games. Lost the first one in a Troll matchup – eDoomshaper vs. Hunters Grim. Lost on scenario. Lost the second one as well. eMadrak vs. Kreoss 3. This time my time ran out – that was a first for me.
Won the third one. eDoomshaper vs. a Mortenebra Tier 4. Not the same as above and vs. a different player. Won this one on scenario. Had to use my feat in the second turn, to send the Axer to the outer edge of the left zone and Mulg to the outer edge of the right zone. My opponent scored on his “enemy zone” in his turn by slamming the Axer out of it and destroying the objective. Unexplicably he left Mulg alone and I scored 2 points there. He didn’t contest the zone – so on my turn, I scored again with Mulg, let the Axer contest the other zone and walked the bomber up to destroy the objective on his side of the board.
Up until that point, only two troopers had left the board. One Kriel Stone Scribe on my side, a Scrap Thrall on his side. I won 5:4 on scenario points.
