Bonehammer’s Brewery: A year in review

A little over a year ago, Alex, Bartek and I got invited back into the hobby. We basically got roped into participating in the biggest tournament in Germany – the Heavy Metal Dayz. We had about 3 months before the tournament to re-familiarize ourselves with game and aquire the necessary miniatures to participate.

As you know, I choose trollbloods as my faction this time around. Both for me and Alex it had been about 5 years since we last played and we had never played a single game in MK II.

Ever since I started, I lost more games than I won. Way more games. Last summer I discovered IronGrudge, an Android app that lets you record your game scores. Since then I have recorded 54 games.

I won 12 of them. Roughly 22%. Not a very good margin. We started out pretty good, placing a respectable 33 out of 40 teams at the Heavy Metal Dayz.

But it went downhill from there. In the fall I had a pretty good stretch, where I went 6-6 over a 12 game stretch, but then I didn’t play for 2 months and 2014 didn’t start particularly well. After the calendar switched to the new year I only one 3 of my first 17 games.

The only notable out of those was a casterkill against Barteks Butcher 3 list. I played Calandra and managed to put a force blow on him, knock him down and then just shoot everything I got at him. In the end a lone Toughalo did the trick and ended his life.

Despite the fact that I lost way more games than I won and haven’t really achieved anything yet, its going better now. The last tournament was a success for us. It was a team tournament and we managed to achieve our goal of two team victories and my personal goal of winning at least one individual matchup. We placed 6th out of 16 teams at that tournament – our best finish. Ever.

That was against a Makeda 3 Skorne list. Highlights of that game … 2 Caber Throwers, buffed up to P+S 18 and with Blood Fury on them managed to take out a fresh Bronzeback (with a little help of two Kriel Warriors). Next round a Gladiator followed.

In the end, with about 5 minutes left on my clock I managed to kill Makeda. She had come forward to kill eMadrak, but didn’t succeed. So the Caber Thrower knocked her down and Madrak finished her off.

I am getting really comfortable with eMadrak by now. I don’t waste the Burrowers anymore, I finally use the Pyre’s animus more regularly and I don’t screw up the activation order anymore. Now I need to find a reliable second and 3rd warlock for tournament settings.

For the Metal Dayz it will be eMadrak and a Borka Family Reunion. I have 3 full units of Champions standing around, Rök is ordered and this will be the first list I’ll try:

Borka Kegslayer – WB: +5
– Pyg Keg Carrier
– Rok – PC: 11

Stone Scribe Chronicler – PC: 2
Trollkin Champion Hero – PC: 3
Trollkin Champion Hero – PC: 3

Trollkin Champions – Leader & 4 Grunts: 9
– Skaldi Bonehammer – Skaldi 3
Trollkin Champions – Leader & 2 Grunts: 5
Trollkin Champions – Leader & 2 Grunts: 5
Krielstone Bearer & Stone Scribes – Leader & 5 Grunts: 4
– Stone Scribe Elder – Elder 1
Greygore Boomhowler & Co. – Boomhowler and 9 Grunts: 9

Should be fun to play.

I am not sure who will be the third warlock. Calandra has amazing assassination potential, but can be countered too easily. I guess it will be one of the Doomshapers, with a beast heavy list featuring Mulg very prominently.

My goal for 2014? Finish at least one tournament even – that is, as much individual victories as losses. And get the stuff I got new (Rök, maybe the War Wagon later on, the Storm Troll, eDoomy, Fennblades) painted.
