Bonehammer’s Brewery: A Swan Song!

As I already announced last week, for the forseeable future my Trolls will go on the shelf and I will switch over to Cygnar.

But not before I took the Trolls out for a last spin. Last weekend was the EU Masters tournament in Rotterdam, where most of the WTC players of Belgium, the Netherlands, Sweden and of course Germany, plus quite a few other players met to see who’s the best player. It was a 7 round event over 2 days.

We travelled there on friday evening so that we could be ready for the games come saturday morning. We played in a bridge club of all places. Tables were set on two floors and 85ish players met to play Warmachine.

I brought the lists I had played almost exclusively the past few months, with only minor tweaks along the way.

I mostly faced players from Belgium or the Netherlands, which was a nice change of pace from facing the same players over and over again in Germany. And Bartek, Alex and I broke a streak. In recent months it was almost inevitable that at some point two of us got paired together in a tournament. Not so this time – which probably was mostly due to my poor performance.

Game 1 Runes of War vs. Durgen Madhammer

That one was over fast. My opponent was pretty nervous and kept saying I’ll beat him pretty easily. Unfortunately it was the other way around. He started and ran everything up the table.

I set up the usual way – let the Runeshapers run and hid Doomshaper behind a wall with the Earth Born animus on him.

But that meant nothing to the Earthbreaker, who proceeded to advance and shoot at Doomshaper. He ignores cover and hit my DEF 13 pretty easily. Thor gave him boosted damage rolls and a few rolls later Doomshaper was dead.

So much for my plan on rocking this tournament.

Game 2 eMadrak vs. Father Lucant

He brought a Prime Axiom and went second this time. Same as before, he ran everything up. I had run everything except the Burrowers who burrowed.

Round 2, I bring the Burrowers out, buff them with Blood Fury and charge them into the Axiom. I only get about 5 of them at the jack, and don’t kill him. Moving Fenns and Toughalos up, as well as Madrak, I feat, but don’t do any damage to the Axiom.

He proceeds to kill stuff and my next turn I finally get rid of the Axiom, but had to overextend my resources to do it. Because of this, I fail to go after the scenario early enough and proceed to deathclock myself.

The list was the right pick against Lucant – but I shouldn’t have spent so much time killing the Axiom. My opponent admitted afterwards, that at some point he just “gave” me the jack, not caring if he died or not, because it meant I was way too focused on the Axiom and he could do other stuff. Him forgetting his feat in one round was a blessing in disguise for him, as it served him way better a turn later.

Two games in I was at 0-2.

Game 3 eGrim vs. Butcher 3

That game wasn’t fun at all. My opponent was pleasant enough, but Butcher 3, or in this case his army just chipped away at mine and eventually I conceded the game when I saw I couldn’t do anything. At all. Butcher 3 stayed back and let his army do the work for him, namely pAlexia and her Risen. So I couldn’t get at him with my shooting and trying to kill the rest of his army proved futile as well.

Game 4 Runes of War vs. pGrim

Oh, a Troll mirror. Those are alyways fun. Not. Up to this point I had played 7 Troll Mirrors and had lost everyone of them. My opponent wasn’t the most veteran player and made a few mistakes, forgetting to feat for instance. At some point Mulg just ate his beasts and proceeded to kill Grim as well.

So the first day ended on a positive note with a win, and beating a Troll player no less.

We went for drinks that night, but after two beers called it quits. Next morning I woke up with a giant headache. Great. After the first game on sunday I seriously considered dropping from the tournament and curling up in a corner to sleep off the headache. I drank 2 beer, but my head decided – “yeapp, thats enough, here is your hangover”.

Game 5 Runes of War vs. eLylyth

My only German opponent. I sorta knew he’d pick eLylyth and went with Runes of War. Didn’t matter. Top of 2 I left a small opening for her and her 3 Ravagores to just assassinate me.

But the good thing was, now I could pop some painkillers and sit in my car and nap. Which I did. And low and behold, in the middle of the second game my headache was gone.

Game 6 eGrim vs. Gorten Grundback

But that didn’t matter much in the game. My opponent brought an Earthbreaker. He didn’t kill me with it. Unfortunately I couldn’t kill it either. I should have picked eMadrak, and would have been able to deal with Gorten better. With about 25 seconds left on my clock I kill boxed myself to give him the victory, just so I could avoid another death clock loss.

Game 7 Runes of War vs. eMorghoul

Yeapp, you read that right. Epic Morghoul in a tournament. In my second turn I had a lane for the Mulg missile towards Morghoul, but I failed a few attack rolls and couldn’t get to him.

I charged a Nihilator, killed him. Then wanted to kill the Agonizer, goad Mulg forward and put some hits on Morghoul. Alas, I failed to hit the Agonizer.

In my feat and with a subsequent Runeshaper blast damage I brought him down to 4 HP, but never had a chance at hitting him again. Eventually I lost via Scenario.

That was my last outing with the Trolls for a while and what a desaster. Since I started recording games about a year ago, I went 33 – 84 overall. Only against Cygnar and Menoth do I have a positive record.

To change that, I am now switching to Cygnar. I’ll keep you updated on that in the coming weeks.
